ADHD is a common behavioral disorder that affects about 10% of school-age children.
Kids with ADHD act without thinking, have trouble focusing and are hyperactive. They may understand what’s expected of them but they have trouble following through because they can’t sit still, or stay focused.
Of course, all kids act this way sometimes, especially when they’re anxious or excited. But the difference in those with ADHD is that symptoms are present in different settings and happen over a longer period. These symptoms hurt a child’s ability to function at home, socially and academically.
Those with ADD, ADHD, tend to have excessive slow waves (usually theta and sometimes low alpha) present in their Pre-Frontal Cortex. A high amount of slow waves in the executive parts of the brain usually makes it difficult to control attention, behavior, and or emotions. Can you imagine functioning optimally with your brain stuck in day dream mode?
Neurofeedback treatment, formerly called electroencephalographic biofeedback (EEG), involves placing sensors on a person’s head to monitor brain activity. Feedback is given to the client with cues that can be as simple as an audio beep or as complex as a video game. When the brainwaves are of the desired frequency, the software will inform the client, the feedback. When the client has learned how to increase the arousal levels and decreased the theta levels, we believe improvements in attention will result and that there will be reductions in ADHD symptoms.
Because ADHD is a result of a circuitry malfunction in the brain, stimulants can correct this problem, but they do not solve the problem. With neurofeedback children and adults can retrain their brains to function more efficiently as our assessments provide immediate positive feedback, allowing many clients to improve attention, cognitive function, sleep, and mood.
